walk don’t run

May 21, 2009

A thousand thousand apologies for our heinous lack of posting lately. As we stressed and procrastinated at school a month ago, we fully expected to have endless time on our hands for copious blog posting during the summer. Sadly, work and exercise and family have intervened for the time being. We’re hoping to get accustomed to the routine and regain our former boredom very soon, so stay tuned.

For now, we have the most fantastically life-changing thing to show you. Ladies and gentlemen (ok, sorry gentlemen, this one’s not for you– but hey, we bill ourselves as meninas, so you shouldn’t be too surprised), we give you…. *drumroll*

Zafu.com is a site devoted to finding women the best possible sizes for bras and jeans. They put you through a 3-minute survey, and voila! Up to 50 amazing selections, priced reasonably and available both online and in stores.

Go now, do a quiz, and just see what it comes up with for you. Even if you’re not in a position to buy (more budget advice coming soon, promise!), Zafu will give you a better idea of what to look for when you’re flush enough to justify a much-needed bra or pair of jeans.

See, they’re adorable! What are you waiting for, go!!

summer’s here?

April 28, 2009

When I left Ontario yesterday morning, it was a breezy 18 degrees Celsius, give or take a few degrees.

This morning in Washington, D.C., it is 32 degrees.

I packed all my summer stuff, but… well, it’s been awhile since I wore most of those clothes. 8 months of french fries, ice cream, burgers and cookies later and I’m in the market for some looser-fitting outfits.

Problem is, I don’t get my first paycheque for a few weeks and I’m on an uber-budgeting kick this summer. Lucky for me, there’s a lot of selection out there. I’ve put together three great, versatile looks that won’t cost me more than $50 US.

(sorry, Canadian readers, but I’m in the land of the strong dollar and crazy-good sales now– but I tried to look mostly at stores with locations in both countries!)

Old Navy:

(since the neckline of this dress is so striking, this necklace looks best as a bracelet looped loosely around the wrist)

Total: $47.49

These outfits are pretty simple, which is ideal for mixing and matching, but cute and fun too. I can punch them up with some more original finds– like a vintage cuff bracelet or a scarf from my favourite boutique– to make the look less mall-catalogue and more my own. With outfits like these, I’ll feel comfortable, pretty, and budget-savvy.

Two more looks after the jump!

sort of a blergy day

April 1, 2009

Today, I am an overwhelmed menina.

Sometimes, you just have one of those days where everything is piling on everything else. So, to try to make myself feel better, and in case you, too, are having a blergy day… here’s a handful of things to cheer us all up.

This is Hasani. He is beyond adorable. I spent about a month giggling with delight every time I saw him. Oh, and he was my desktop picture so I giggled often.

I don’t know what it is about this scene, but something about it– the song, Matilda’s newfound powers– it always gives me, like it did her, the faith that I’ll be able to overcome a situation I’d previously had no control over.

And lastly, when I get bummed, sometimes I like retail therapy without having to actually shell out any money. So I go to Uncommon Goods, my favourite quirky online store du jour, and fill up my wish list. I just found out about it from a fabulous Jezebel commenter and it’s phenomenal!

Must run, they’re giving out free food on campus and I don’t want to miss it!
